Control.

Over on Fandango’s Provocative Question this week the topic is control. The question posed is…

How much control do you believe you have over your own life?

Fandango, 11/9/19

I believe that in life the only thing we have true control over is our own actions and thoughts; everything else is only the perception of control. I know from personal experience that having control, true control is almost impossible.

What I mean by this is that I believe we control only ourselves, everything else that we think we are in control of is just a fallacy , a construct we create to ensure our own confidences.

We all think we are in control when we drive our cars but at any moment one of a number of things could go wrong and suddenly all control is taken away from you. Similarly in life, you could think that you are an on top of the world, successful, happy family man one minute and then suddenly the company are laying off and your in the firing line. Your control of your life and your situation is suddenly taken away from you. No one can control everything that happens around them at all times and so no one can truly have control of their lives.

Day after day, year after year we gain and lose control of many different aspects of our lives yet we still believe we are in control of a given situation! We still hold on to the concept that we are in control when all we are in control of is ourselves. The actuality being that the only things we have true control over is how we react to events and situations as they arise throughout our lives.

I believe that we have no control over our lives, all we can control is how we react to its events and challenges.
